The Most Common Surname in Slovakia Is the Hungarian Word for "Croat"

There are 36,772 men in Slovakia named Horváth, and 32,234 women named Horváthová. No other surname in the country comes close. The word is not Slovak. It is Hungarian, and it means "Croat."

This is not a quirk of one name. Slovakia's fourth most common surname, Tóth, is the Hungarian word once used for Slovaks. Seven of the country's nine most common surnames are Hungarian words. And the thing they mostly record is not where anyone's ancestors came from — it is what the neighbours called them.

This article is about how ethnonym surnames — surnames that are literally the name of a people — work, why Central Europe has so many of them, and why the one place a surname meaning "Croat" tells you almost nothing about is Croatia.

Slovakia's Top Ten, and What the Words Mean

Here is the head of our sk_SK surname list. The weight column is the relative frequency our data assigns each name; the file holds 918 surnames with a combined weight of 2,910, so a weight of 40 is about 1.37% of the distribution.

Two details are worth pausing on.

First, this ordering is not our invention. The Slovak Interior Ministry's register produces the same top ten in the same sequence — Horváth, Kováč, Varga, Tóth, Nagy, Baláž, Szabó, Molnár, Balog, Lukáč. Our list reproduces the official ranking name for name.

Second, look at rows 2 and 3 together. Kováč is the Slovak word for smith and sits at #2. The Hungarian word for smith, Kovács, is also in the file — at #26, weight 9. The same occupation, two orthographies, both alive in the same country, 900 years of shared administration apart. Slovakia's surname stock is not "Slovak names plus a Hungarian minority." It is a single pool in which both vocabularies are ordinary.

Seven of the Top Nine

Count the Hungarian words in the head: Horváth, Varga, Tóth, Nagy, Szabó, Molnár, Balog. That is seven of the top nine — everything except Kováč and Baláž. Together those seven carry a weight of 157, which is 5.40% of the entire file and 75.8% of the weight in the top nine.

Of those seven, two are ethnonyms (Horváth, Tóth), three are trades (Varga, Szabó, Molnár), and two are physical descriptions (Nagy, Balog). That mix matters: it tells you these names were coined the ordinary way, by neighbours describing a man in the local everyday language. The language happened to be Hungarian.

Why Hungarian Words Are Ordinary in Slovakia

The plain historical reason: the territory of present-day Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary from roughly the 10th century until 1920, when the Treaty of Trianon assigned it to Czechoslovakia. In administrative geography it was the kingdom's northern region, historically referred to as Upper Hungary. It was ethnically mixed throughout — Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans in the mining towns, Ruthenians in the east.

Surnames in the region hardened into fixed, heritable form over the 16th–19th centuries, while that administration was in place. The names were fixed in the vocabulary of the time and then simply stopped changing. A surname is a fossil: it records the language spoken around a family when the name froze, not the language spoken by that family since.

So the presence of Hungarian surnames in Slovakia is a statement about when and in what language names were written down. It is not a statement about anyone's ancestry, and this article makes no claim about whose territory anything was. The interesting question is narrower and more answerable: what does a word like horvát record when it becomes somebody's name?

What an Ethnonym Surname Actually Records

The intuition is that a man named "Croat" was a Croat. The intuition is roughly backwards.

An ethnonym only works as an identifier when it distinguishes someone. In a village of Croats, calling a man "the Croat" identifies nobody. The name is only useful where the trait is rare — where one household stands out against everyone else. So an ethnonym surname is evidence of a person being unusual in the place they lived. It describes the surroundings as much as the bearer.

That is why Horváth is the most common surname in Slovakia rather than in Croatia. The name was coined where being called a Croat was worth remarking on.

The mechanism has a second, sharper edge, and onomastic research is explicit about it: the connection between the first bearer and the ethnic group may or may not have been descent. Tamás Farkas and Mariann Slíz note that such a name could equally arise because someone moved to or from a region, owned property there, traded there, served or was held captive there — or simply matched a stereotype associated with that group. A man called Tóth might have been a Slovak, might have come back from a spell in the northern counties, or might have merely dressed the part.

And the words themselves drifted. Farkas records that most Hungarian ethnonyms picked up non-ethnic meanings: görög meant "Greek" but also "merchant"; oláh meant "Vlach" but also "shepherd"; orosz meant "Russian" but also "Eastern Orthodox by religion." By the time these words became surnames, several of them were closer to occupations or confessions than to nationalities.

The honest summary is: an ethnonym surname is a record of contact, not of blood.

Hungary: Thirteen Words, 8.2% of the Distribution

Hungary applies the same logic to itself. In our hu_HU file (699 surnames, total weight 1,597), the ethnonym layer runs from the very top down into the tail:

Those thirteen names are 1.86% of the distinct surnames in the file but 8.20% of its weight — a handful of name types carrying a disproportionate share of bearers. Farkas puts the same phenomenon at "at most 0.5% of the surname stock, yet their proportion is 7–8%," and counts three ethnonyms in Hungary's top ten and seven in the top fifty. Our file has three in the top ten (Tóth #3, Horváth #5, Németh #9). Note the mirror: Hungary's #3 means "Slovak" and Slovakia's #1 means "Croat." Each country's list is full of words for somebody else.

Croatia completes the triangle. Our hr_HR file's #1 is Horvat, weight 40 of 2,465 — the same word again, in its Croatian form.

About That 8.2% — a Check, Not a Coincidence

It is tempting to present our 8.20% and Farkas's 7–8% as independent measurements that happen to agree. They are not, and we are not going to claim they are.

Our hu_HU weights are calibrated against published Hungarian registry frequencies. That calibration is tight enough to be visible: our Tóth share is 2.192% against the registry's 2.19%, and our Szabó lands on 2.13% against 2.13%. Farkas's percentages come from the same registry lineage. Our number reproduces his because both trace to the same underlying counts.

What the exercise does establish is worth something, just less than a coincidence would be. It is a consistency check, and it runs in a different direction from Farkas's: he computed an aggregate over the whole stock; we summed thirteen individual rows of a file built for an unrelated purpose and landed inside his range. That confirms our file's per-name weights are internally coherent and faithful to the source distribution. It is not corroboration of the 7–8% figure itself. Anyone reporting it as such is double-counting one dataset.

Our 8.20% sits slightly above his range, which is expected: our figure is a share of a 699-name file's weight, while his is a share of a national population including a long tail our file does not carry.

The Same Class, Across the Region

Ethnonym surnames are not a Hungarian speciality — they are a Central European one. Checking our other locale files for the pattern:

German (de_DE, 1,029 surnames): Böhm #59 ("Bohemian") is the cleanest case. Also present: Schwab #388 (Swabian), Preuß #350 (Prussian), Bayer #90 (Bavarian), Unger #413 (Hungarian), Sachs #834 (Saxon), Deutsch #485 (German), Schweizer #870 (Swiss). Two cautions: Unger and Bayer are exactly the names Farkas and Slíz flag as having different status in Germany than in Hungary, and Sachs has a messier etymology than Böhm — it is not reliably a plain "Saxon." Ungar and Sachse are not in our file at all.

Polish (pl_PL, 1,272 surnames): Niemiec #270 ("German") and Czech #469 ("Czech") both confirmed. The richer finds are Węgrzyn #172 (Hungarian — Poland's own answer to Unger), Litwin #850 (Lithuanian), Rusin #1073 (Ruthenian), Szwed #326 (Swede), Turek #335 (Turk), Prus #1046 (Prussian), Wołoszyn #1247 (Vlach). Mazur #15 (weight 14) is the highest-ranked of the family but is regional — a Masurian — not foreign.

Ukrainian (uk_UA, 2,209 surnames): the pattern holds, though mostly in derived forms rather than the bare noun. Present: Мазур #30, Москаленко #44 (from moskal, an old word for a Muscovite), Литвиненко #41 ("son of the Lithuanian/Belarusian"), Гуцул #164 (Hutsul), Волощук #610 and Волошенко #606 (Vlach), Ляшенко #1246 (from liakh, a Pole), Німчук #1416 (German), Турченко #1937 (Turk). The bare forms Волошин, Литвин and Лях are not in our file — only the suffixed derivatives are.

Slovak makes its own, too. Alongside the Hungarian layer, sk_SK carries Slovak-language ethnonyms: Rusnák #38 (Rusyn), Slovák #39, Nemec #48 (German), Čech #74 (Czech), Polák #200 (Pole), Valach #222 (Vlach). Same mechanism, different vocabulary, sitting in the same file.

Methodology

Data as of 2026-07-17.

  • Rankings, weights and shares are computed directly from names/sk_SK/lastname_male.tsv (918 entries, total weight 2,910), names/hu_HU/lastname_male.tsv (699 / 1,597), names/hr_HR/lastname_male.tsv (902 / 2,465), names/de_DE/lastname_male.tsv (1,029 / 1,946), names/pl_PL/lastname_male.tsv (1,272 / 3,607) and names/uk_UA/lastname_male.tsv (2,209 / 5,340).
  • The Polish and Ukrainian corpora have been rebuilt since these ranks were computedpl_PL now holds 28,959 entries carrying 16,682,538 registry bearers and uk_UA 2,562 entries carrying 9,752,950. Every Polish and Ukrainian rank quoted above describes the corpus as it stood on the measurement date, not the shipped file; the Slovak, Hungarian, Croatian and German figures are unchanged.
  • "Weight" is relative frequency within a file, calibrated against published national registry frequencies where those exist. It is not a headcount. "Share of file" is weight divided by the file's total weight — a share of our distribution, not of a country's population. The two are close for Hungary by construction, which is the point of the section above.
  • Our files list male forms; Slovak, Czech and Hungarian female forms are separate entries (Horváth → Horváthová).
  • Ethnonym classification is by the surname's literal lexical meaning, not by any claim about bearers. Regional identifiers (Mazur, Székely, Гуцул, Hess) are marked as regional, not foreign, and excluded from the strict counts.

Deliberately not claimed here: that our 8.20% independently corroborates Farkas's 7–8% (same data lineage — see above); that Sachs, Bayer, Unger, Pohl or Frank have unambiguous ethnonym etymologies in German (they do not); or anything at all about the ancestry of people who carry these names.

Conclusion

A surname that means "Croat" topping the Slovak register is not a puzzle about Croats. It is three ordinary facts stacked on each other: names froze into heritable form while the region's administrative language was Hungarian; the words available for naming people included the words for peoples; and a word for a people is only useful as a name where that people is scarce.

The last of these is the one that generalises. Horváth in Slovakia, Tóth in Hungary, Niemiec in Poland, Böhm in Germany, Литвиненко in Ukraine — every one of them is a small record of somebody being noticed as different by the people around them, at the moment surnames stopped moving. Read that way, the top of Slovakia's register is not a claim about anyone's origins. It is a map of who was standing next to whom.
